The African wild dog also known as Cape hunting dog or painted dog, generally moves around in the open plains and also can be seen roaming around in the sparse woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. These long-legged creatures only possess four toes per foot, that other dogs do not have.
Other dogs have five toes on their forefeet. The dog is called a painted wolf in Latin, because of their mottled and irregular coat, which shows patches of black, white, brown, red and yellow fur. Each animal has their own unique set of coat pattern, and they all have large and rounded ears.
These dogs are quite social, and they are known for sharing food and to aid ill or weak members. The dogs communicate by actions, vocalizations or touch, and their social interactions are very common. African wild dogs hunt in cooperate, formidable packs of around 6 to 20 animals or more. There were bigger packs of more hunting dogs before them started becoming endangered. The pack of dogs hunt antelopes and can easily tackle down larger preys such as wild boars, more if they are already injured or ill.
They always live in packs that are mostly dominated by a breeding pair that is monogamous. The female gives birth to 2 to 20 pups, and they are taken care of by the whole pack of wild dogs.
