Tarantula hawk

General

The Tarantula hawk is the name given to a spider wasp because it preys on tarantulas. This creature belongs to the genera Pepsis or Hemipepsis. These wasps have big stings which they use to sting on their prey and paralyse them. Then they drag their prey to a brood nest and lays an egg. The larva when hatches, eats on the living prey. This is not an endangered animal, but it needs to be protected for balancing the eco-system.

Characteristics

The average length of these species is 5 cm. Thus, these are the largest living wasps. The colour of their bodies is blue-black. The wings are generally rust coloured. The colour of their bodies is a sign that it is toxic. If some predators want to prey on them, they must be aware as the wasp can give a powerful and toxic sting. These wasps have long legs and the claws are hooked. The sting of a female Tarantula Hawk can be 7 mm long. This sting is the most painful sting in the whole world.

Behaviour

The female wasp paralyses a tarantula with its sting and brings it to its brooding nest when it lays an egg. The egg hatches and the larva enter the body of the tarantula from its abdomen and feeds on its body internally. However, it leaves the main organs so that the tarantula remains alive. Thus, the wasp grows in the body of the tarantula. These wasps are very active in the summer season, but they try to avoid the high temperatures. The female Tarantula Hawk does not want to sting but when it stings, the sting is very painful.

Diet

They feed on the living tarantula. They grow on the living tarantula and then gets out of the body. The Tarantula Hawk usually do not eat on anything other than the living tarantula.
