Nyala

General

Nyala is type of native antelope found in the southern part of Africa. These types of antelopes have spiral horns. The body length of a nyala is around 135 to 195 cm, and it weighs around 55 to 140kgs. The coat of a nyala is rusty and rufous brown in juveniles and females. Although, the coat often grows a slate grey or dark brown, with a tinge of blue, in male adults. Young males and females have more than ten white stripes on the side of their body. Only the male nyalas have horns, which ae 60-83 cm long and is yellow tipped. They have the most sexual dimorphism among all the other spiral horned antelopes.

Characteristics

The nyalas are quite active in the morning and in the late afternoon. It mostly browses during daytime when the temperature is around 20 to 30 degree C.

Diet

They are herbivores and feed upon fruits, grasses and foliage, with enough fresh water.
