Muntjac

General

Muntjac deers are barking deers and are quite old in its evolution. They are one of the oldest species and so these animals often take attention of the scientists. These animals are found in Southern Asia. The anima has quite distinct and unique cry and this is what makes it seek attention.

Characteristics

The male deers and female deers can look distinctively different because of the size and the body structure. Even though the younger ones grow very quickly in a year still, the grown up males are matured and they are quite sturdy and strong. They have a life of around 10-15 years. The adult muntjac might have the weight of around 50-60KG.

Behaviour

In most of the cases, these deers live in woodlands and they are basically quite active. They go out in group or herd of 5 to 6 deer. In most of the cases the male muntjacs are quite cooperative with one another and they do not trespass anyone else’s territory. But when it comes to female, there might be fights over the same. Canines are mainly given to them for having hard foods. But often during fights or self defence they use these canines and tear the flesh of the opponent.
When there is any danger around the muntjac deer would bark and make the other deers around alert.

Diet

Muntjacs are herbivores and rely on the foods that are available in that particular habitat. They have specific sense of smell, vision and hearing and this always helps it to locate any danger nearby. They can even get an idea about the habitat that would help them to flourish and feed over. Muntjacs would graze grass and other plant based items depending upon the habitat where it survives.
There are many predators like leopard who would always find a good chance to attack over these species. But these deers have good defence mechanism and so they can use their skills and hide or counter attack depending upon the situation.
