Lowland Streaked Tenrec

General

Lowland streaked tenrecs are endemic to Madagascar. These creepy looking insectivores form a diverse group. Tenrecinae looks like a cross between a hedgehog and a shrew; their snouts are pointed and long, and their coat has spines all over it.

Characteristics

The Lowland streaked tenrecs and differentiated by two main features and that is, a long black in colour nose, that is longer than that of other small insectivores such as hedgehogs, mouse, and the other feature being the black coat, which also shows yellow stripes on it, with a bright yellow spine crest, that is situated on the top of their head. It acts a means of self-defence during any danger against predators.

Behaviour

The natural range of Fossa covers all of eastern of Madagascar, they live in the scrubland, lowland and mid-altitude rainforests. The lowland streaked tenrec only socializes with tenrec species, they gather in groups. A group of tenrecs are a family unit, which consist of around 20 of tenrecs. During the month of May to October, they conserve heat by lowering the temperature of their body to that of the air, and they are active meanwhile. But, when it becomes cold, they do go through a long stretch of hibernation.
