Gaboon viper

General

Gabon Viper are the snakes that dwell on grounds, they are basically seen in Central and Western Africa along the tropical jungles. They can find their prey in the best way because they are mostly hidden behind the roots and leaves of the plants and so even if they are gigantic, they would not be spotted easily. These are heavy snakes and have weight of around 10KG. They might have the length of 125cm. They have triangular head and have a life span of around 20 years.

Characteristics

Gabon Vipers have bold patterns over the body and so often they stay hidden in their habitat. They have brown and purple patterns with square and triangle shaped. These snakes have triangular head and the fangs that they have are quite large and they are venomous as well. They can sense the vibrations on the ground and this would be a basic way to find the prey or to sense the danger.

Behaviour

Normally the vipers do their own things but when there is mating season, often there will be snake fight over a selected female viper. This is kind of a competition. When the mating season starts there would be apt activity between the male viper and the female viper. Once the birth time is near the female viper would find a good birthing ground and then give birth to around 50 off springs and mostly 20 would survive. The baby vipers have to fend for themselves and there would be no parental involvement or activity in raising them.

Diet

Gabon Vipers are night hunters and they would smell and feed on mammals like rabbit, mice, squirrels etc. They may even attack and feed over parrots, pigeon, frogs and even eggs of the tortoise. There are many other mammals that this snake would attack and then eat.
