Their eye for their prey is brilliant, they can spot a fish from a long distance and will dive and hunt it. Fishing cats mostly stay on wetlands as that is their favourite habitat. In Asia, fishing cats are mostly found in the Sunderbans mangrove forests, they are also found on the foothills of Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Ganga river.

Characteristics

They are about twice the size or a normal house cat. Fishing cats are felines and they have powerful stocky legs. The size of an adult fishing cat is around 57 to 78 cm and they weigh around 5 to 16kg. The fishing cat is great at swimming, and they get into water very frequently because as the name suggests, they prey on fishes. They can also do acrobatic dives to catch fishes.

Diet

Fishing cats are nocturnal creatures and they prey on fish as well as frogs, snakes, birds, carcasses of large animals, and crustaceans.

Reproduction

They can breed all year round, although in Asia, the peak season of breeding is around March and May. They give birth to around 1 to 4 kittens. They become independent adults when they are 10 months old. Fishing cats can live up to an age of around 12 years approximately.
