The scientific name of the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is Crotalus adamenteus. This creature is found in large numbers in the South-Eastern United States. It is the heaviest snakes found in America. It is also known to be the largest rattlesnake. This species is found in the dry pine forests, swamp forests, etc. This species is decreasing in number day by day because of losing its habitat and hunting. These species can now be called an endangered species.

Characteristics


The average length of this snake is 8 feet and the weight can be up to 10 pounds. These snakes have iconic tails which are known as rattles. The rattles are very hard, loosely attached hollow segments. The rattles are very brittle and breaks easily. The rattle segments shed often and the snakes can regrow their rattles again. Thus, it is very difficult to determine the age of a snake according to its rattles.

Behaviour


The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake takes shelter by digging tunnels in the gophers. They also shelter themselves in the tortoise burrows. This species does not know the art of climbing. These species are very good at swimming. When they are angry or they need to prey, they can raise their body from the ground and coil their body in the shape of S. Then striking from a distance of more than half of its body length is their great art. This creature rattles very loudly before striking on anyone.

Diet

The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake feeds on small mammals. Rabbits and rice rats are the most favourite ones. They also eat birds. The grown rattlesnakes can easily feed on the cottontail rabbits. As they have a large body, feeding on large animals is not a problem. Other animals on which they like to feed on are marsh rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice and even wild turkey.
