Earwigs are known to make up the Dermaptera insect order.It has around 2000 species in 12 families and are one of the smallest insects.

Characteristics

Earwigs have medium sized flat bodies which are usually black or brown with stripes as well as reddish colors on their limbs and their head.These bugs can be around one to one fourth inches long and some of its comprises of the large long black pinchers that look like forceps. They hardly fly though tyey have wings.

The female earwigs are kown to care for their eggs unlike other insects of the kingdom.The earwigs also look after the babies after they have already hatched.This is a very uncommon behavior among other insects

Distribution

Earwigs are found in abundant amounts in America and Eurasia.The most common earwig was found in North America but it is most common around southern and south western parts of the United states.They can survive in the cold and can be found in tight crevices in woodland, fields and gardens

Diet

Earwigs are known to be nocturnal feeders which usually thrive on other small insects as well as vegetation like lichens, moss and fungi.They are also known to love decaying material, dead mushromms, decaying leaves, as well as greasy good items that have rotted.

Reproduction

Earwigs are kown to undergo complete metamorphosisand develop through series called molts.They live for about a ear after hatching.They mate in the autumn and are found together in winter and autumn in chambers, debris , crevics and in soil 2.5 centimetres deep.
