Centipedes happen to be minute invertebrates that are a part of the class of arthropods. The number of species of this animal that is present across the world is approximately 8000. While a few centipedes inhabit urban parts and live near humans a few live in the wild. Centipedes aren’t on the listing of endangered species.

Some revealing facts about the centipede
The name “centipede” has its origin in Latin language and its meaning is “hundred legs”. In spite of its name, a good number of species of centipedes do not have hundred legs. They typically have between 15 and 30 pairs of legs.

Characteristics

It is amongst the most main predators of the insect planet. The claws present on their initial body segment are amongst the noticeable traits of centipedes. It’s a carnivorous animal and thus is an untainted meat-eater. They mostly prey on spiders, earthworms, insects, and more small invertebrates.

They have a preference for dark and damp places. Centipedes happen to a greater part of their life out of sight beneath the leaves, rocks, or inside the decaying wood. Centipedes are able to bite individuals as an act of self defense. Te good thing is that such injuries are hardly ever fatal.

They are usually predators that actively hunt for and slay their prey. They typically consume spiders, worms, insects, and mollusks. Larger species consume small birds, frogs, and bats.

Reproduction

Mating season typically happens throughout the spring & summer. Females lay a maximum of 60 eggs within holes in the earth. Incubation phase continues for between one and two months.
