Bats are known to be the only mammals who are capable of natural and sustainable flight. Their forelimbs form webbed limbs.Bats are Bats are known to be the second largest order of mammals just after rodents.

Bats do not flap their entire forelimbs like birds, however, they do flap their spread out digits that are really long and covered with a thin membrane called the patagium. There are about 1240 species of bats that are divided into two suborders – the fruit eating and the insectivorous bats.

The smallest bat called the Kittis hog nosed bat measures 29–34 mm in length, 15 cms across the wings and weighs  2–2.6 gm. The largest species of bats that is the flying foxes and the giant golden crowned flying fox weighs around 1.6 kgs and has a wingspan up to 1.7 m.

About 70% of the bat species are known to be insectivorous and the rest of the class is known to be fruit eaters. There are some species of bats that feed on fish and meat while some species that are known as vampire bats that feed only on bloods. Bats are important for human beings as they help to remove pesticides.

Reproduction

Most of the bats are known to have a breeding season. The most favorable breeding time is the spring season for bats living in temperate climates. Bats can have around 2-3 litters in a season depending on the species and the environment. Female bats have one offspring at one time. Female bats are known to feed their young till they reach an adult stage.A young bat cannot fly unless it has fully developed wings. The timings of pregnancy can be controlled by female bats by a variety of strategies so that the young are born when there is ample food all around.

Distribution

Bats are nocturnal mammals that hunt at night. They sleep in the daytime and hunt at night.They are found all over the world including Asia and America as well as Africa.
