Axolotl is an animal which many people think of as a water animal. But actually it is an amphibian. Even though it is popularly known as Mexican walking fish, it is not a fish. There has been habitat destruction and due to this the specific species is endangered. It resides in fresh water lakes and ponds.
This animal might have an average size of 15cm to 45 cm and the weight if around 0.1kg. They have external gills. They can respire through the gills and at the same time they can do the same with their skin too. The specie also has caudal fin.
Within a period of six months to one year Axolotl reaches the age of reproduction. The breeding process first includes a dance between the male and the female Axolotl and then soon they would start with mating. The cloaca region will be rubbed first and then the male will transfer some mass in the female cloaca region. Later fertilization takes place when sperm goes into the female axolotl. When the eggs are laid there would be around 500 eggs and then within two weeks they would be hatched. It is important to note that the young ones when they are born would get no parental guidance and hence they learn to feed on micro worms on their own.
This animal species is quite different yet quite interesting. They have the sense to find prey around and during mating season they can also attract the mates from the nearby breeding areas.
This animal thrives on fishes and anthropods. They also consume insect larvae that are available in fresh water lakes. They also feed on salmon fish eggs. Apart from that they also like to eat the terrestrial black worms and blood worms. They can also suck shrimps and tadpoles. They get earthworms in abundance and so this is their staple food.
