Ankylosaurus Fossil Facts

Ankylosaurus

Ankylosaurus is known to have lived in Western North America 68-66 million years ago. Ankylosaurus are four-legged, herbivorous dinosaurs. These are characterized by armor made of bone plates. They appeared in the Middle Jurassic but when they reached a worldwide distribution, they summited in the Cretaceous period. The oldest finding of these animals was Nodosaurus (1889), Euoplocephalus (1902) and Ankylosaurus (1908) from North America.

Ankylosaurus Facts

  • Some ankylosaurus can reach four to six meters. The longest specimen is ankylosaurus 9 meters, the smallest specimen is Struthiosaurus Minm.
  • All ankylosaurus have a strong big body and four strong legs. Its hind legs were longer than its front legs, so its body was bent forward and its heads were close to the ground.
  • Ankylosaurus have big and sturdy skulls seated on a solid neck.
  • In this animal, two bony protrusions appear behind the eye sockets and on the cheeks.
  • They move with only four feet. The hind legs are longer than the forelegs that bring the heads close to the ground.
  • Ankylosaurus is covered in low, slow-moving and thick, almost incomprehensible armor.
  • When fully grown, an adult Ankylosaurus weighs no more than three or four tons and is close to the ground with a low center of gravity.
  • Considering its size and the environment it lives in, Ankylosourus are extremely cool.
  • The metabolism of these animals is slow at night.
  • According to some studies, it is stated that these animals have strong sense of smell.

Ankylosaurus Fossil

A team gathered through Barnum Brown discovered the first ankylosaurus fossil species in Montana in 1906, a piece of skull, ribs, vertebrae, armor and a shoulder belt. Six years later, Brown again revealed an ankylosaurus osteoderm, which he thought might have belonged to another dinosaur species. While this grass-fed dinosaur species has a fairly large body, a re-examination of its fossils through expert Kenneth Carpenter has shrunk somewhat in 2004. According to published studies, the largest ankylosaurus fossil ever found was an average of 6.25 m in size, 1.5 m in width and 1.7 m in height. According to the assumptions, it weighed about 3.5-4 tons. The upper part of the Ankylosaurus dinozoron is covered with thick armor, consisting of large skins or oval bone plates, also known as scutes or osteoderms, which are almost literally common in amadillos, crocodiles and some lizard species. It has bones similar to crocodile.
