About Gharial

General

Gharials also known as gavials, are an Asian type of crocodile that is distinguished by their thin and long snouts. Crocodilians are a group that has crocodiles, caimans, and more. These was once found from Pakistan to Myanmar, but now it can be found in India, Nepal. Since the middle of 1900s, the number of gharial have decreases as much as 98% because of hunting for traditional medicine and drastic change to their fresh water habitats. For example, people have stopped the flow of rivers, and made certain areas dry and hence made it difficult for the gharials to survive.

Characteristics

A typical gharial can go up to 12 to 15 feet long and can weigh up to 2000 pounds. Gharials regulate the temperature of their body by basking in the sun in order to warm up or resis the shade.

Behaviour

Male Gharials gets a large growth on their snout known as ghara which is the hindi word for ‘pot’. Males use their gharas to blow bubbles and vocalize during their mating period. The animals make nests during the dry season and congregate for mating, when females lay eggs on the sandbanks which is along side the slow-moving river section.
